Maintenance of active electrodes

Hi, in the manual from http://www.cortechsolutions.com/getmedi ... veTwo.aspx, it suggests to soak the electrodes in salt water once a week or before each use. (“Soak in salt water once a week or before each use for up to 5 minutes at a time.”)
I was wondering why it is highly recommended. And if this is necessary, will table salt be good?
